Volunteer FAQ

IS THERE AN ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM TO VOLUNTEER?

Yes, there is. Please go to the “Register to Volunteer” page. If you are already a registered KTB volunteer and you wish to volunteer for the upcoming event, as soon as registration is available you can click on “Schedule a Volunteer Shift”. If you have never volunteered for the KTB but are interested in doing so, please click “Join the Interested Volunteers List”. Once registration is open for an event in your area, you will be notified to return to this page to schedule a shift. Send any inquiries to komentb@iupui.edu.

HOW LONG WILL THE DAY BE?

Normally, events in Indianapolis are one-shift days. In general for one shift days, volunteers are asked to arrive at 7:30 am and will be released anywhere between 3:30 and 5:00 pm, dependent upon what jobs they are performing.  Events held outside of Indianapolis will have two shifts available for volunteering.  For these events, volunteers are asked to arrive at 7:30 am for the first shift, and will be released at 1:00 to go to lunch. If assigned to the second shift, volunteers will arrive in time to eat lunch first, if desired. They will start working their shift promptly at 12:30, and stay until 6:00p.m. For a special event these shifts and times may need to be adjusted.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO A TISSUE COLLECTION EVENT?

You will be given a Komen Tissue Bank T-shirt to wear. Please pair it with any bottom – skirt or pants – that is appropriate and comfortable. You should wear comfortable shoes that are easy to walk in. Volunteers assigned to be surgical assistants, specimen runners, or lab volunteers must wear closed toed shoes.

DO I NEED TO BE IN THE MEDICAL FIELD TO VOLUNTEER?

Not at all. We do have several volunteer positions which must be filled by medical professionals, but large numbers of our volunteers are lay people.

DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR PARKING?

Currently, most of our collection events are held at the IU Simon Cancer Center on the campus of Indiana University – Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI), just west of downtown. At these events, volunteers are able to park in the adjoining parking garage at no charge. When we travel to other cities the volunteers who accompany us may have to take on some of their own travel expenses.

MAY I BRING MY CHILD(REN) TO HELP?

Though we do have some positions which can easily be performed by responsible teenagers, we do not encourage the accompaniment of any children without the volunteer having made prior arrangements with our event manager.

CAN I DONATE AND VOLUNTEER ON THE SAME DAY?

If there is only one volunteer shift, we rarely allow volunteers to donate during the event which they are working, as volunteers need to remain at their posts throughout the entire shift. Many of our events, however, are structured for two volunteer shifts. If this is the case, volunteers may donate during the shift they are not working. They should make an appointment like all other donors.

ARE MEN ALLOWED TO VOLUNTEER?

Absolutely! We have several volunteers who are men. All tissue collections occur in closed examination rooms, ensuring the privacy and comfort of donors.

WHERE CAN I FIND RESEARCH PUBLISHED USING THE KTB SAMPLES?

Research including manuscripts published which have used samples from the Komen Tissue Bank.
